Vietnam: Locals dig up culled pigs for meat

March 2, 2009

Residents of Duy Xuyen District in the central province of Quang Nam on Saturday were found digging up three pigs diagnosed with blue ear disease that had previously been buried by authorized agencies.

The province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said Sunday the diggers took one pig with them and left the other two behind upon being discovered by the relevant agencies.

Local authorities are planning strict measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

According to statistics provided by the provincial Department of Animal Health, 45 areas in the province have been found to have pigs with the disease.

Around 1,200 pigs have been destroyed since the disease broke out in the province about a week ago.
