The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) was notified by the Health and Family Planning Commission (HFPC) of Guangdong Province today (January 8) of an additional human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) affecting a woman aged 51.
The patient, who lives in Foshan, had onset of symptoms on December 31, 2013, and was admitted to a local hospital on January 3. Her specimen tested positive for the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus by the relevant health authority of Guangdong Province today. She had bought and slaughtered a live chicken at home on December 31. Her current condition is critical. The 21 close contacts of the patient have been put under medical surveillance by the relevant health authority of Guangdong Province. No abnormalities have been found among her close contacts so far.
Regarding another human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) notified to the CHP by the Guangdong HFPC yesterday (January 7) affecting a 31-year-old male patient in Shenzhen, the respiratory specimens of his close contact in Hong Kong who is a four-year-old girl as well as that of her 37-year-old mother both tested negative for the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus by the CHP's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch. The girl remains under quarantine.
