Friday was the final answer. Det er fugleinfluensasmitte på gården i Østfold. It is Avian influenza infection on the farm in Østfold. Nå har Mattilsynet sperret av en kilometerssone rundt gården. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has now blocked by a kilometer zone around the farm.

Thursday was the alarm after the discovery of what could be traces of the mild form of Avian influenza on a farm in Trøgstad.

Friday came confirmation that gårdeier Evy Lund Kvernes feared.

One of the birds on the farm were infected by the Avian influenza and a total of some 50 geese, ducks and chickens had to be slaughtered and destroyed to remove the Biological Hazards.

- I thought they would not find anything. So even if I am to some extent was prepared, so I was shock, "a feel gårdeier to NRK Østfold.

Quarantine for more farms
The birds are probably infected by wild birds, according to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. It is the first time a tamfugl population is infected in Norway.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has established a quarantine zone for at least one kilometers area around the farm.

Within the zone there are at least three large farms with Poultry operation. Restrictions have led to extensive restrictions on the operation of these.

- It is important that no birds are coming into or out of this area. There will be strict hygiene requirements for those affected, "said Jarle Bergsø in the Norwegian Food Safety Authority in Inner Østfold to NRK.

Concerned gårdeier
Gårdeier Evy Kvernes Lund says she is concerned for neighbor's behalf.

- I am very concerned on behalf of them. Very sad that they are imposed tough restrictions, and I hope inderlig they do not find any infection there. But I do not feel that we could do something different. I have also talked with the neighbors, and they are less worried than me, "said Lund Kvernes.

There will be samples of all bird populations on these farms. The answer to these samples are expected at the beginning of next week.

H7 is generally harmless to humans.

Bondelag are informed about the situation. They believe there is little danger of the spread of infection to other animals in the area.

The virus can evolve
The severe form of Avian influenza (høypatogen Avian influenza) is a dyresykdom that can lead to significant economic consequences for the Poultry industry if it get a foothold in this country.

Because influensavirus may change when they occur in animals, there is a certain danger that less dangerous virus can be converted to more dangerous, or høypatogene over time.

Detection of some of the milder variants of the Avian influenza virus (SubType H5 and H7) will be handled as an A-disease, with relatively comprehensive measures.

The virus that is found on the farm in Trøgstad is the type H7.

For a few months ago, Veterinarians, the Norwegian Food Safety and Poultry producers with a comprehensive emergency preparedness exercise on the Avian influenza just in Østfold

The first samples were taken at the farm 19 November. 2. December, a scant two weeks later, hit Veterinærinstuttet alarm.

But it was coincidence that the virus was found, "said distriktssjef for the Norwegian Food Safety Authority in Inner Østfold, Kirsti Ullsfoss.

Already two years ago was the hunt for the virus intensified, but the Norwegian Food Safety Authority admits that found in Trøgstad was pretty random.

- It is a little random in that this crew was picked to be included in the monitoring. At the same time, we believe that we cover well. But it is clear there is little chance of discovery, "said distriktssjef for the Norwegian Food Safety Authority in Inner Østfold, Kirsti Ullsfoss.

The fact that it took two weeks from the samples were taken to the analysis presented, there is no drama in, she said.

- There is no preparedness for speed today, but it's experienced time when the results come on our board, we act quickly, "she said.

Kiristi Ullsfoss are very happy with the way the matter has been handled, and believe that the systems function properly.

- We have a monitoring system that works because we caught them up, and emergency work as it says Ullsfoss.
