Another suspected EL cholera case

4 December 2008, 16:47 CAT
Another Ethiopian has been admitted to the Frere Hospital in East London to be tested for cholera. An Ethiopian suffering from cholera is already in isolation in the same hospital after returning from Zimbabwe.

The Eastern Cape Health Department has dispatched officials to the Buffalo City municipality to search for seven more Ethiopians who share a house with the patient.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal health officials are on high alert after confirming a second case of cholera. A truck driver in that province died after a recent trip to Zimbabwe. It led to a fast rollout of monitoring systems across KwaZulu-Natal.

The Ethekwini municipality says all rivers in the province are cholera-free, with water safe to drink. A warning has however been issued to communities who draw water from high-risk areas.
