Residents raise a stink over chickens

JAKARTA: Residents of Cengkareng Timur subdistrict in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, have complained about waste from a chicken slaughterhouse in the area.

Nurul, 24, said residents had been raising a stink over the slaughterhouse that dumped foul-smelling waste into the neighborhood's gutters.

"What can I do? Every day we have to smell the stench. During the wet season like this, it's worse," Nurul was quoted as saying by beritajakarta.com on Wednesday.

She said she was concerned about the risk of catching bird flu, claiming the owner of the slaughterhouse seemed to ignore sanitation issues.

"See for yourself, it is such a (dirty) place. We have asked the subdistrict office to do something about it," she said.

Another resident, Yati, 28, said she went to her neighbor's house, where the stench was not discernible, to prevent her baby from breathing in the smell.

Salim, 40, said residents had raised the issue with the subdistrict office several times, but to no avail.

Cengkareng district office head, Rohali, said he was aware of the situation and would order the Cengkareng Timur subdistrict office head to investigate the slaughterhouse. If it was in violation of any regulations, he added, the office would close it down.

The owner and employees of the slaughterhouse refused to comment Wednesday on the complaints
