7 birds test positive for H5N1

Feb 7, 2009
HONG KONG - HONG Kong authorities confirmed on Saturday that seven dead birds recently found in the territory all tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu strain.

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said laboratory tests confirmed that four chickens, a duck, a Peregrine Falcon and a Grey Heron found dead this month carried the deadly strain.

The Grey Heron was discovered earlier this month at a bird sanctuary located in the northwestern corner of Hong Kong which has since been temporarily closed. The reserve has been a known haven for migratory birds for decades.

The department said earlier it had found the H5N1 strain in four other dead birds collected in Lantau island in Hong Kong since January 29.
