France: 5000 ducks slaughtered in Vendée

Livestock was suffering from a virus apparently low pathogenic H5.
It is under new precautionary measures that apply to forms of low pathogenic avian influenza viruses that ducks have been slaughtered, said the prefecture of Vendée in a statement.

"This is an H5 virus but not N1 (H5N1 being the most pathogenic avian influenza viruses, ie)," said the deputy director of the veterinary services department, Frédéric André.

"As a precautionary measure, it is applied within a radius of 1 km of livestock covered by the census of poultry farms, which will be subject to increased surveillance, restriction of movement of poultry in the same area ", said the prefecture.
Cases of low pathogenic viruses have already been observed in the department but "this is the first time that a farm slaughtered under a 2008 regulation that required in case of low pathogenic virus," said M . André AFP. "This prevents the virus walks in nature," he added.
