October 13, 2011
VIRUS H5N1 bird flu turned out to have the endurance to live for four days in water with temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is zero degrees Celsius, the virus has survived for 30 days.

When living in the stools of sick poultry or poultry, virus survival is long enough. However, this virus can be turned off with temperatures of 60 degrees for 30 minutes, for 1 minute at 80 degrees and three hours at 50 degrees. Therefore, it is worth noting for the prevention of bird flu infection is personal hygiene and environmental hygiene as well as the chicken coop.

Team Secretary Sanglah Hospital bird flu dr. Ken Wirasandhi, MARS explained, the potential for transmission of bird flu in humans comes from the lack of hygienic processing of poultry meat or when cleaning the cage. "The problem is not the time to cook chicken, but the process of processing before cooking is not hygienic," he said.

At the time of processing of chicken meat, people are not aware if his hands contaminated with the virus and perform other activities when processing such as smoked chicken, spice processing or eating without washing hands first. "The virus dies when sprayed with disinfectant or soap. Therefore, after holding a chicken or live chickens, must wash hands with soap," he explained. Cleanliness of the cage with a disinfectant spray can also kill the presence of this virus.

Communities should also be vigilant in case of sudden death of poultry in the neighborhood and immediately report to local officials. If there is any family or neighbors who suffer from symptoms of ILI (Influenza Like Illness) such as runny nose, fever and shortness after had contact with dead birds, was immediately taken to the nearest health.
