2009-06-10

NEW DELHI, June 10 (Xinhua) -- India will urge the countries affected by the H1N1 flu, including the United States whose universities are already on summer vacation, to screen all the out-bound passengers to India to prevent the deadly virus from spreading here, a senior Indian government official said Wednesday.

"The Indian Health Ministry has written a letter to the Indian External Affairs Ministry to take up the issue of screening with all the swine-flu affected countries so that the passengers, mostly students, returning to India on vacation be screened of theH1N1 virus. The Health Ministry cannot take up the issue with foreign countries directly due to protocol reasons," the official said, seeking anonymity.

The letter by Indian Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna states: "We expect a substantial inflow of our students returning from vacation from affected countries. In this view you are requested to take up the matter with the governments of affected countries to do screening of out-bound passengers at their airports."
