لمواجهة الطاعون القادم من الغرب، بدأ خبير من كبار خبراء منظمة الصحة العالمية بجنيف، زيارة ميدانية للجماهيرية الليبية، التى ظهر فيها المرض مؤخراً، بهدف عمل تقصى واسع النطاق داخل الأراضى الليبية، كما يجرى الخبير عملية ترصد وبائى وتقييم لوضع المرض القاتل هناك. وأفادت المنظمة بأن الخبير يساعد فى تطوير نظام فعال للتصدى لتفشى الطاعون واحتوائه فى الوقت المناسب، وذكرت أنه طبقاً للوائح الصحية الدولية سوف تقوم المنظمة بتوفير المزيد من معلومات الصحة العمومية فور تلقيها من الزيارة الميدانية. The organization reported that the expert help in the development of an effective system to deal with and contain the outbreak of plague in a timely manner, and stated that in accordance with the regulations of the International Health Organization will provide more health information received from the public immediately after the field visit.

كما حذرت المنظمة، من خطورة تفشى مرض الطاعون على حياة البشر، وقالت إن المرض ظهر بشكل محدود فى منطقة طبرق الليبية، مؤكدة «أن الطاعون من الأمراض التى تستدعى استخدام آلية اتخاذ القرار للتقييم والإخطار عن الأحداث الصحية التى قد تشكل طارئة صحية عمومية تسبب قلقاً عالمياً». It also warned of the seriousness of the outbreak of plague on human life, said that the disease appeared limited in the Tobruk Libyan, saying «that the plague of diseases requiring the use of decision-making mechanism for the assessment and notification of health events that may constitute a public health emergency caused global concern ».

وكان المكتب الإقليمى للمنظمة لشرق المتوسط بالقاهرة، أصدر بياناً أمس حول الطاعون، ذكر فيه أنه مرض بكتيرى تسببه عصيات بكتيرية تسمى «اليرسنية الطاعونية»، التى تصيب بصفة رئيسية القوارض البرية، وينتقل المرض من حيوان قارض لآخر عن طريق البراغيث، ويصاب البشر الذين يتعرضون للدغ البراغيث المصابة بالطاعون. The FAO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean in Cairo, issued a statement yesterday on the plague, in which he stated that the bacterial disease caused by bacteria called Bacillus «Alisnip Taonip», which mainly affects wild rodents and transmitted from one rodent to another animal by fleas, infected humans who are exposed to bites fleas infected with plague.

وأوضح البيان أن التشخيص المبكر وسرعة المعالجة أمران أساسيان للحد من مضاعفات الطاعون والوفيات الناجمة عنه، ويمكن للتدخلات العلاجية الفعالة أن تؤدى إلى نسبة شفاء تصل إلى ١٠٠٪ تقريباً، إذا ما تم تشخيص الإصابات فى الوقت المناسب. The statement pointed out that early diagnosis and rapid treatment are essential to reduce complications and deaths from the plague, and therapeutic interventions can be performed in the effective recovery rate of up to almost 100%, if the injury was diagnosed in a timely manner.
